Inventory of Live Stock HERBIVORES: Leading the group are the herd of the Indian Elephant in a large grassy open enclosure, closely followed by the rare Great Indian Rhinoceros. Matching these are the group of Hippopotamus from Africa found with their young, keeping their bodies cool in the water pool. The rare Indian Wild Asses have a place of Pride in the Zoo. The exclusively Indian Antelopes, Nilgai, Black Buck, Chousingha and Chinkara have large spacious open enclosures. The Deer group includes the large Sambar, Barasingha and the beautiful Cheetal (Spotted Deer), Hog Deer, the Barking Deer and the Mouse Deer.The pride possession among the Deer is the group of Manipur or Brow Antlered Deer (Sangai), which are endangered in the Wild. The Zoo is successful in breeding all the Deer and are proud to restock and rehabilitate most of them in the Wild. Inventory of Live Stock BIRDS: Besides India's national Bird the Peacock, other Pheasants exhibited are Golden, Silver, Khalij, Cheer, Lady Amhrest and Ring necked. Also exhibited are Spur Fowls, Partridges and Quails. Rosy, Pelicans and Flamingoes can be seen in the big ponds alongwith stroks like Adjustant, Black. Sarus Crane and the Demoiselle Cranes can be seen in the large open grasslands. Ducks and Geese are represented by a large variety in duck ponds, walk through aviaries and in other ponds. The Parrot family includes the colourful Macawas and Cockatoos, Lorries and good colllection of love birds and other Indian Parakeets. The Zoo also has a good collection of Pigeons, Doves and Birds of prey. Also included in the collection are the Great Hornbills, Pied Hornbills and Grey Horn Bills, Assam wreathed Horn Bills, which are exhibited in specially designed large arched cages which is first of its kind in the country.
Inventory of Live Stock REPTILES: A pair of Giant Tortoises (100 Kgs. and more) having a age about 74 years, greet visitors near the children corner. Several Star Tortoises and fresh water Turtles along with their cousins the Gharials, Muggers and the Estuarine Crocodiles all in the open pools. Monitor Lizards and Chameleon are kept in reptile house. The Hooded Indian Cobra, the beautiful Russell's Viper and Giant Rock Python and Reticulated Pythons are kept in open enclosure along with their other colleagues like the Keel back and Trees Snakes in reptile house. Water monitor lizards are introduced in open moat. Inventory of Live Stock SPECIALTIES: The Zoo is proud to be the first to have the Asiatic Lion Safari in India, first Tiger Safari Park, the first Modern Nocturnal Animal House where the animals are active during night, are displayed, which includes Lorries, Civets, a variety of Bats and Jungle Cats, Porcupines, Owls, Ratel etc. The Modern Reptile House and the Safari Parks for Bear are unique in their own right.
