Lion Safari Park

Lion Safari

Lion - Safari
Safari Parks are...

a new concept in the display of wild animals in captivity. They have been apply described as Topsy-Turvy Zoos or Zoos in Reverse. The main idea in such parks is to keep animals in large enclosures in the maximum freedom possible. People see them caged from cars and buses, which are taken inside the enclosures. This revolutionary idea was first put into action in the United Kingdom in 1966 and in Japan. At present there are a few more Safari Parks in United Kingdom, West Germany, United States of America and Japan etc. Most of these Parks or Reserves feature Fauna in Western settings as a substitute for the African National Parks.

One of the major aspects of setting up of Safari Parks was to keep these animals in near natural settings and develop them into large breeding groups which would form a nucleus for their eventual return to wild to restock the depleted wild populations.

Depicting the same principles, a modern Safari Park for Indian Lions was setup at Nehru Zoological Park in the year 1974, which was first of its kind in India. The first Lion Safari Park in the Country had a group of rare Indian Lions from the Gir forests of Gujrat where they are said to be less than 200.This is the First Safari Park setup in India. The first Lion Safari Park for the endangered asiatic lion has been setup in the Western corner of the Nehru Zoological Park. It has an area of over 30 acres enclosing a varied habitat reminiscent of its native Gir Forest in the Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat state, India. This is the only place in the entire continent Asia where the Lion is still found though in very small numbers.

The area provided in the Safari Park encompasses dense scrub and forest, open Savarnah grassland, bouldery hills and grassy plateau. The pride of Lions usually select the shade of Lantana and Fluggia bushes and Acacia arabica trees. The Park has a network of roads covering the entire park depicting different types of habitats like the rocky plateau, the valleys and small streams. Visitors are taken in closed vans from which they can watch the Lions in their natural settings.

The Park provides an exciting experience for people who like to view wild animals moving about in unfettered freedom. For tourists the park is a tremendous attraction and a unique experience. They will be able to take photographs of our unique fauna in a natural setting with ease and in comfort.
