OTTERS

Otters House

Otters House
The Otters are...
animals of the wet land eco-system living in lakes, rivers and large streams. They feed chiefly on fish and play an important role in riverine eco-system keeping in check the predatory fishes.

The Otters have decreased substantially in numbers and range during the present century through a combination of various factors like pollution of river system (industrial effluents), habitat destruction (draining of wet lands and denudation of stream and riverside vegetation) and direct persecution. In view of their endangered status the Otters have been offered maximum protection under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and steps are being taken to rehabilitate them through captive breeding in the various Zoos.
