ANIMAL HEALTH CARE – STAFF

            The Deputy Director is in overall charge of the zoos and Sanctuaries of the state and he is a liaison officer between Animal husbandry and forest department.  Dr. M.Naveen Kumar was promoted to this post during this year.As a result the post of Asst. Director fell vacant.The Dy. Director is assisted by four para Veterinary staff.

            The area of the zoo, wherein the exhibits are present are roughly delimited and the Vet-staff are allotted to the respective enclosures and area.  Every morning the respective staff go on round and inspect the health, sanitation, hygiene and other aspects.  In case any abnormality is noticed the matter is brought to the notice of the Asst. Director or Veterinary Asst. Surgeon for immediate action.  Depending up on the severity of the problem the animal is either shifted to the in-patient ward or kept in the animal house only and treated. 

            The feed items in the feed stores are checked by the Dy. Director for quality every morning and released for distribution to the animals after thorough disinfections.

 Most of the cases of death were mainly  due to senility and due to  injuries sustained during infighting and self inflicted they were no outbreak of any contagious and Zoonotic diseases during the period.   

Prophylactic Treatment:

            Prophylactic measures adopted are like regular faecal sample examination of individual animals and random sample examination of animals every month.  Periodical    de-worming and specific de-worming of animals of positive cases were carried out.  In the year 2005-2006 – 2,639 feacal samples were examined at Veterinary Biological Research Institute Hyderabad out of which169 samples are positive. Further 230 random feacal samples of different species were examined in the Zoo laboratory out of which 33 are positive for different parasites, sequent treatment was followed up. 

Apart from this. urine samples of 7 elephants for detection of urine cortisol levels were sent to Department of wildlife Science, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and also also fecal samples for detection of parasitic eggs. Feed samples for aflotoxins. Serum samples and skin with tissue of Tiger,Wolf,Jaguar,Wild Dog, Sloth Bear were sent to wildlife Forensic cell, Wildlife Institute of India.

EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF VETERINARIANS:

Apart from the regular round check-up the health of the animals,regular lecture classes are conducted for the internees from college of Veterinery Science and Under graduates from Veterinary Colleges from neighbouring States ,who visit Zoo. Classes on disease management, restrains and breeding management are taken by Dy. Director for the students benefit. during the year 2005-06, 45 Internees and 110 Under graduates from neighbouring States like Maharashtra and Karnataka and also Under graduates from other parts of Andhra Pradesh visited the Zoo. Three Veterinary Asst. surgeons from Nalgonda where trained in handling tranquilizing equipment (Dart Gun) for three days from 16.2.2006 to 18.2.2006 for capturing and translocation of feral cattle in Nalgonda District.

RESCUE AND REHABILITATION OF WILD ANIMALS:

One Elephant which ran amuck in Gulbarga town of Karnataka killing the Mahavat was restrained and handed over to the temple trust in Gulbarga on 26-6-2005.Two juvenile bear cubs were rescued from a dry well, which had fallen by accident in Mahaboob nagar, Dist. on 28-08-2005 and released back in the same area. On 16-03-2006, one wild adult male Sloth Bear which entered into a house in Karimnagar town from adjacent hillocks was successfully chemically restrained and brought back to the Zoo which is subsequently released in the adjoining area in July, 2005. On 31-03- 2006 seven jackals were released in to the wildlife sanctuary at Mannanur, Mahaboobnagar, Dist.

CONSERVATION BREEDING:   

Many of the endangered species have bred in the zoo during the year 2005-06.Theanimal which bred are Asiatic Lions,Tigers,Mouse Deer, Sloth Bear, Hog Deer, Swamp deer,Samber,Black Buck,Jackal,Palm Caivet,Cockatoos and Pheasants,Grey Parrot, Painted Stork, White Ibus,Emus.

Hand Rearing: Hand rearing of the Olive Baboon, Lion cubs, White Tiger cubs was done successfully.

Pheasant Breeding Programme: Pheasant breeding during 2005-2006 was very successful  Most of the hatchings where in Silver pheasant -- 34, Golden Pheasant -- 3, Ring necked pheasant -- 3, Khalij pheasant -- 4, White Pea fowl -- 1,  Reeves Pheasant -- 1, and Grey jungle fowl -- 7, in numbers.

Research Activities

            The Veterinarians of the zoo are assisting in the experiments for wild life conservation conducted by C.C.M.B under project assigned by Central Zoo Authority. This year successfully artificially inseminated and successful one spotted deer farn was born.
